Carroll Street Brownstone
Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York • 2009

A Brooklyn brownstone is reinvented as a two-story garden apartment. Juxtaposing new and old, museum-style floating walls frame the original tin ceilings and old-growth pine floors upstairs. Downstairs a new ceiling and polished concrete floor play against the rough texture of the reclaimed foundation walls. A new stairway interconnects the spaces, brings light into the lower reaches of the apartment, and guides the family and guests down to the garden-level terrace. A new rear façade brings in even more light and allows views inside and out.
